The San Diego Chapter of Amigos de las Americas offers an excellent program that sends teens and young adults on service projects across Latin America. Our 2009 volunteers traveled to 6 different countries in Latin America and returned with amazing experiences in their hearts and new life goals!  Think of the opportunities awaiting you!   Click here to request information.

How it Works...

Every year a select group of volunteers spends six to eight weeks in a host country working on different public health projects. Countries where volunteers will live and work in the summer of 2010 include the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Paraguay.

The Process

Throughout the school year our chapter prepares its members for their Latin America experiences through training in cross-cultural sensitivity, networking, technical skills, personal health & safety, and the culture of Latin America. In June, our volunteers travel to their assigned countries. Once in country, they meet up with volunteers from other chapters from across the United States and are then placed, in partnerships of two to four and sent off to rural/semi-rural communities to live and do service work in for the duration of their trip (which is typically 5 to 8 weeks).

Its more than just that!

Life-long friendships are being built between AMIGOS and their adopted communities. Thousands of young people every year  learn invaluable lessons about cultural similarities, community service, and their own potential and ability to lead through their experiences with AMIGOS on a scale that few other programs can match. Many former volunteers cite Amigos when discussing what influenced in their choice of career and degree and many selective colleges look for unique extracurriculars, like AMIGOS, when admitting students. Join in as a volunteer or a Board member, make a difference...be an AMIGO!
